Candid wedding day photos- my best tips and tricks!

February 1st, 2024

Hey! I’m Bekah- dog mom, high school coach, wife to aspiring lumberjack, photographer. Today I want to share with you my best tips for getting more candid photos from your wedding day!

1. Plan something special with your closest friends and family on the day (and tell your photographer!). Many people opt for “first looks” with their husband-to-be for exactly this reason- candid, emotional, private moments between you and your love. Use this same principle and extend it to others, here’s some ideas:

  • First look with your parents or grandparents
  • Sharing your “something borrowed” with the person you borrowed it from
  • Exchanging notes or gifts with your groom (even if you’re not doing a first look!)
  • Dance moves with your flower girl or ring bearer
  • Champagne toast with your bridal party

2. Be comfortable with your photographer! Three things go a long way to making sure you and your guests are comfortable with your wedding-day paparazzi:

  • Have an engagement session- it’s why I include it in all of my packages. You’ll meet me, we’ll joke around and have fun, all while you are learning posing and how to be relaxed in front of the camera. The best photos ALWAYS come from the end of a session, so think about your engagement photos as the beginning of your wedding day.
  • Don’t be tempted to opt for the shortest possible wedding day package. Yes, your ceremony may be at five o’clock and dancing at eight, so four to nine sounds perfect, right? Not really. You want to have me there early, taking those getting ready photos, do some of the formal portraits before the ceremony so you can attend your cocktail hour and enjoy everything you worked so hard to plan! If you are planning a full wedding day, make sure to have me there the whole day so I have time to capture everything!
  • Introduce me! I want to meet everyone- your bridal party, groomsmen, parents, grandparents. Your favorite aunt, closest cousin and childhood best friend. These are the folks you are going to be hanging out with the most, let's make sure they are comfortable in front of the camera as well!

3. Most important- remember to enjoy your wedding day! You have prepped and planned everything, and your best friends are here to make sure everything goes smoothly- so take a breath and just enjoy! The more fun you are having, the more you will LOVE your photos!!

If you're searching for an outgoing and fun photographer for your wedding day, email me today! I'd love to hear everything you're planning and see if we would be a good fit!!

Thanks so much for reading!
